To support early literacy development, the St. Louis Public Library provides several Lit Kits for emerging, early and transitional readers.
The original Lit Kit collection contains activities and items that encourage caregivers and children to talk, sing, read, write and play together as they build a strong educational foundation.
The Lit Kit: Phonics collection is designed for children learning to read, including older students who may require additional support. By focusing on the relationship between sounds and letters, these kits help children develop key skills and gain reading confidence through a step-by-step approach that progresses from basic word structures to more complex literacy skills.
Developed in collaboration with the Magic House and supported by the Lilly Endowment, the Lit Kit: Hero Quest series is geared toward a slightly older age group than the original kits. This collection focuses on character traits such as courage, curiosity, and kindness by highlighting four historical figures who embody each trait. The kits accompany the Hero Quest kiosks, which are inspired by Brad Meltzer’s “Ordinary People Change the World” book series.
