|Scope and Content:||
The papers of Caralee Strock Stanard (1898-1988) span the years 1942-1988, with the bulk of the material dated between 1947 and 1962. The collection consists of biographical materials, correspondence related to her work as fashion writer for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, fashion press releases, and items relevant to Stanard’s lengthy service to Alpha Delta Pi.
Caralee Strock Stanard (1895-1988) was a graduate of the
University of Missouri School of Journalism in 1917. Stanard
wrote for the Peoria Journal Transcript briefly before moving to St. Louis to work for the St. Louis Star and the St. Louis Times. From 1932-1960, Stanard worked at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch writing weekly fashion columns under the pen name Sylvia Stiles. After retirement, Stanard worked at Webster College (University) as the Communications Director. She was active in the Theta Sigma Phi local chapter. She was a member of Alpha Delta Pi and served nationally as Grand President from 1938-1948 and Editor of the Adelphian from 1936-38 and 1962-1980. She authored the Creed of Alpha Delta Pi. Her husband, Sidney Stanard was news editor of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and died in 1961. They had one child, Caralee Sydney Stanard.
