Want to become a video game maker?

Learn how to make and design your own video game, then challenge yourself to create your game in a day! All workshops and programs for this series will be held at Central Library, 1301 Olive Street. 

LEARN
JULY 15 / 6-8 PM / MAKING NARRATIVE GAMES WITH TWINE
Join us in Creative Experience to kick off the start to a game filled two weeks! This program teaches you how to make your own interactive stories. You’ll use Twine to create games where players choose what happens next. It’s all about combining creative writing with simple game-making tools—no coding experience needed. By the end, you’ll have the basics down to be able to make your own playable story to share.

JULY 16 / 6-8 PM / ART PRINCIPLES FOR GAMES
Get ready to explore the visual magic behind games in Art Principles for Games! This program teaches you the basics of art and design that make games look and feel awesome. You’ll learn about color, shape, composition, and how to create characters and environments that bring your game world to life. After that you'll have the tools to start designing your own game-ready art.

JULY 17 / 5-7 PM / WALK CYCLE ANIMATION
Get ready to bring characters to life through animation! This program teaches you the basics of animation by showing you how to animate a character walking step by step. You’ll learn about timing, movement, and how to break down a walk into key poses that look smooth and natural. Then you’ll have the skills to create your own walk cycle animation for your very own 2D game.

JULY 24 / 6-8 PM / SIMPLE AUDIO TOOLS FOR GAMES
Join us on your journey into the world of game sound! This program teaches you how to create sound effects and music that bring your games to life. You’ll use easy-to-learn audio tools to add sounds to different parts of your game.

CREATE
GAME JAM / JULY 26 & 27

Participants have 27 hours to create a video game, work alone or in teams. All skill levels welcome, staff from STL Game Dev and SLPL will be on hand to facilitate. The theme will be announced at the opening ceremony.

OPENING CEREMONY / 10 AM / JULY 26
OPEN WORK TIME / 11 AM-5 PM / JULY 26
GAME PRESENTING & PLAYTIME / 2-5 PM / JULY 27

Join us for the Summer Library Game Jam!  All skill levels welcome, seasoned game makers and first timers! There will be a bit of facilitation from STL Game Dev and SLPL staff, but otherwise its a free for all game development event. Work alone or with a team, the only thing that matters is using the supplied theme! The theme will be announced during the opening ceremony.

There will be free wifi and some computers available for participants to use, but supplies are limited. You are also welcome to bring your own machines to work on. You aren’t required to work at the library the entire time, but the space will be held for participants to use for collaboration.

Games must be submitted by 1:30 p.m. on July 27. Once all games are submitted, participants can play and test out all submissions.
