What is the Memory Lab?
The Memory Lab includes a DIY set of equipment to scan documents, photographs, and slides and to transfer film, VHS tapes, and more to digital formats.

What You’ll Need
- One of the formats listed above. Please check your materials. Documents or photos with mold, mildew, or dirt cannot be scanned. Broken or damaged tapes cannot be digitized.
- A personal external memory source. A USB compatible flash drive or external hard drive for saving files is recommended.
How to Get Started
- Memory Lab equipment is available for in-library use at Julia Davis Creative Experience during normal business hours
- Memory Lab equipment is available on a walk-in or reservation basis. Reservations are encouraged, but not required.
- Submit this form (link to reservation form) to request a Memory Lab reservation at Julia Davis Creative Experience.
Things to Know
- Customers are responsible for ensuring the completion of their project. You must be logged into and using the computer during the duration of your project.
- Digitization of video and audio takes place in real time. For example, if your VHS tape is 120 minutes long, it will take 120 minutes to digitize with added time for equipment set-up and to transfer files to your storage device.
- If this is your first time using the Memory Lab, you will need to sign a waiver as the Library is not responsible for damaged materials
- If you need assistance using the equipment, it is recommended that you make a Tech Connect appointment to ensure that there is a staff member available to assist you one-on-one.
