The FOCUS/Midwest Collection was assembled over time by Editor and Publisher, Charles Klotzer. Klotzer began his career in journalism as assistant editor at the Troy (Ill.) Tribune in 1948. He was founder of the Greater St. Louis Jewish Star and later, editor of the St. Louis Jewish Light (1947-). Klotzer and his wife Rose launched FOCUS/Midwest, a monthly dealing with the social, political and racial issues of the 1960s. In 1970, they founded, with the help of area journalists, academicians and social activists the St. Louis Journalism Review. In 1983, Klotzer merged FOCUS/Midwest and the St. Louis Journalism Review to be known as the later, making the SJR the only paper in the country to review local media. The Klotzers were the largest, and most of the time the sole, financiers for the SJR.
