| In the Display Cases | "YES": A Tribute to Yoko Ono | Artist Elaine Harris | Yoko Ono's prompts from her seminal early 1960s book Grapefruit; her performance art and her music; her life and the biographies written about her; and her fascinating positivity in the face of absolutely everything inspired the multi-media works of this tribute by local creative Elaine Harris. Like Yoko would intend, the works in this exhibit are intended for the viewer to "keep wishing." Like Yoko would intend, the works are intended for the viewer to love, inspire, and nurture self-creativity. |
My recent work uses acrylic, graphite, and ink to portray in an abstract way thoughts of nothingness and its elation. The white substrate where the colorful forms and lines occur returns as a layer to threaten and accentuate the liveliness of color. Many of the paintings are composed at the same time as others and, in this way, reflect elements shared by the various works. There are also differences in application, color, and lines between the paintings like the variation between individuals and their fellow beings. Some of the lines are like silhouettes of figures, plants, and landscapes. Seen as a mix of these ideas, the paintings can portray individuals made up not only of their body and minds, but with their environment included into themselves. There is also a range in how the lines and colors are applied. Many parts include chance, as the paintings have elements which are drawn or painted blindly. Many of the lines are expressionistic and show different feelings that people experience, from chaotic and hectic to calm and serene. We know salt... we shall know sugar...
