The collection was assembled over time by Alfred Fleishman. From 1987-2001, Alfred Fleishman donated four donations to the Media Archives.

The first accession of personal papers and business records (90-100 lin. ft.) was donated from Alfred Fleishman in the Fall of 1987.

The second accession was donated by Alfred Fleishman on June 3, 1993. The donation consisted of Fleishman’s weekly column "Common Sense & Communications" published between October 7-13, 1991 and April 27-May 3, 1992.

Scope and Content:

The papers of Alfred Fleishman (1905-2002) span the years

1926-2002, with the bulk dated between 1960 and 1982. The collection consists of extensive personal and professional correspondence, photographs, biographical materials, published articles, speeches & writings, clippings, awards, memorabilia, and audiovisual recordings. Materials in the collection related to Fleishman-Hillard, Inc. contain memorandums, correspondence, speeches, and published materials. The papers document Fleishman’s public relations career, his work, travel, and wide-ranging civic involvement with the St. Louis, national and international Jewish communities.

Alfred ‘Al’ Fleishman was co-founder of the St. Louis public relations firm, Fleishman-Hillard, Inc. A native of St. Louis, Fleishman graduated from Central High School in 1924 and from St. Louis College of Pharmacy in 1926. By 1934, he worked as the Superintendent of Recreation for the City of St. Louis and received the distinguished service award of the U. S. Junior Chamber of Commerce.

After an eighteen-month service in the Missouri National Guard, Fleishman served in World War II in the Army Air Force. During this time, he was a special consultant on public relations to the Secretary of Defense at the Pentagon.

Shortly after returning to St. Louis in June of 1946, Fleishman partnered with Jack Hillard to create Fleishman-Hillard.

Fleishman continued his civic involvement in St. Louis by serving on a variety of organization boards including the Boy Scouts of America, the Urban League of St. Louis, and the St. Louis Public Library.

In the course of his career, he represented major institutions in St. Louis including the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, Emerson Electric, May Department Stores, the St. Louis Baseball Cardinals, and Anheuser-Busch.
