Central West End Backpack Program Brings School Supplies to Area Students

Local students are invited to the Central West End Backpack Program, an event offering free school supplies, on September 4, from 4-6:30 p.m. at the Schlafly Library, 225 North Euclid Ave.

The event, being coordinated by Kindred Hospital St. Louis, will provide hundreds of backpacks filled with school supplies to students in the Central West End. Students without transportation to the library can go to the St. Louis Boys and Girls Club, where vans will transport them to and from the library.

“Back to school should be an exciting time for local families, not a time to stress over expenses such as school supplies,” said Kevin Shrake, Chief Executive Officer of Kindred Hospital St. Louis. “We found a lot of willing partners in the community who put in the time and resources to do something that benefits our community, and something that we hope will get the school year off to a better start for many families.”

Companies such as Kindred Hospital St. Louis, Chase Park Sonesta and Carboline Company will provide backpacks, while supplies are coming from the World Chess Hall of Fame, The CUP, Paul Mitchell School, Travel Plex, STLBTA and Dr. Kim Perry. The City of St. Louis will be represented by the Youth Empowerment Services program to provide information to families about positive lifestyle principles. The St. Louis Public Library is providing the distribution space, the Boys and Girls Club of St. Louis providing transportation, and the Central West End Association and CWE North Business Community Improvement District are assisting with community awareness.
