In our second episode of Your Library Podcast, we go an architectural audio tour of Central Library with docent Susan Pruchnicki. Designed by renowned architect Cass Gilbert, the building opened on January 6, 1912. In 2012, the Library reopened after a two year, award-winning renovation just in time for its 100th anniversary. As Pruchnicki guides us through the halls and rooms of Central Library, she comments on the imagery, intention, and inspiration of this historic building. Designed in the Beaux-Arts style, the architecture is reminiscent of the Greeks and Romans, the painted plaster ceilings reflect the Italian Renaissance, yet there are still hints of the modern. The details are endless! This audio tour is a condensed version of the hour long tours provided by our volunteer docents on Mondays and Saturdays.
We also hear from SLPL PR Manager Jen Hatton for another Did You Know to discuss how you can find free flower, herb, and vegetable seeds through the Seed Exchange Program at our Kingshighway location. Technology Services Manager Jon Drakesmith returns for Tech Talk and tells us how you can bring the internet home by checking out our free SLPL WiFi HotSpots.
Next, we hear about Play Date Theater from Youth Services Advocate Carrie Dietz. Every third Saturday at Central Library, local theater companies give a live performance designed for the whole family. Kids have an opportunity to learn theater etiquette, participate in the performance, and meet performers.
Finally, in a PSA from Chris LaBarbera, Librarian in the Entertainment, Literature, and Biography Room at Central Library, we learn about our Zine Collection! Established in 2016, this collection includes nearly 300 zines, many from local St. Louisians. Drop by to check out one of these self-published works!
