10/20 (Thu) – Subterranean’s Sweet 16! Party bag giveaways all day and happy hour from 5:30-7:30 pm. Subterranean Books, 11 am – 8 pm.

10/22 (Sat) – Lit in the Lou feat. Marc Brown and Jacqueline Woodson. Discussions and book signings with children’s and teen’s writers 10 am to 4:15 pm, Jackson Park Elementary School. Culminates in a literary pub crawl (tickets required) on the Delmar Loop with readings from local authors, 7 pm.

10/27 (Thu) – Visiting Professor Cole Swenson lectures on the craft of poetry. Washington University, Hurst Lounge, Duncker Hall 201, 6 pm.

11/3 (Thu) – T.C. Boyle, The Terranauts. St. Louis County Library – Headquarters, 7 pm.

11/5, 12, 19, and 26 (Sat) – Come Write In! for NaNoWriMo. St. Louis Public Library – Central, 2-5 pm.

11/6 (Sun) – Curtis Sittenfeld, Eligible. Kirkwood Public Library, 2 pm.

11/7 (Mon) – Observable Readings: Averill Curdy (Song and Error: Poems) and Stephanie Schlaifer (Cleavemark), presented by the St. Louis Poetry Center. Dressel’s Public House, 7:30 pm.

11/10 (Thu) – Charles Monroe-Kane, Lithium Jesus: A Memoir of Mania. Left Bank Books, 7 pm.

11/12 (Sat) – Anthony Bourdain: The Hunger Tour, with Appetites: A Cookbook available for purchase. Tickets required. The Fabulous Fox Theatre, 8 pm.

 

SUBMISSION OPPORTUNITIES – OCTOBER/NOVEMBER

Sixfold Short Story and Poetry Awards. Two awards of $1000 each and publication in Sixfold. Submit up to five poems (no more than 10 pages) or up to 20 pages of prose. $5 entry fee. Deadline October 24th.

Madison Review Poetry and Fiction Prizes. Two prizes of $1000 each and publication in Madison Review. Submit three poems of no more than 15 pages for the Phyllis Smart Young Prize in Poetry or a story of up to 30 pages for the Chris O’Malley Prize in Fiction with a $10 entry fee. Deadline November 1st.

Mid-American Review Poetry and Fiction Contests. Two prizes of $1000 each and publication in Mid-American Review. Submit up to three poems for the James Wright Poetry Award or a short story of up to 6000 words for the Sherwood Anderson Fiction Award with a $10 entry fee (copy of prize issue included). Deadline November 1st.

Pushcart Press Editors’ Book Award. $1000 prize for a fiction or nonfiction manuscript that has been rejected by a commercial publisher. Must be submitted with a formal letter of nomination from an editor at a U.S. or Canadian publishing company. No entry fee. Deadline November 15th.
