Staff Pick: Braiding Sweetgrass

Robin Wall Kimmerer, a Native American author, has a Ph.D. in Biology; she is also a professor and mother. Rooted in multiple places and identities, she weaves stories of family, students, Native Americans, plants, land and wigwams--and Native stories of origins and thanksgiving. Braiding Sweetgrass is a wonderfully human and earthy book that connects readers not only to earth, roots and Native respect, but also through humor to chocolate and student songs and skits. If the earth is mother, Kimmerer is a midwife who reminds us from whence we came and to whom we will return. Her writing is not dry but rich, not harsh but gentle -- filled with an earth-alluring love.
