Staff Pick: Asking for It

Emma O’Donovan is the most beautiful girl in her small, Irish town; everyone has said so for all of her life. Popular throughout the community, it is no surprise when she is the center of attention at a party she shows up at with girlfriends. However, when her parents find her, disheveled, barely conscious, and badly sunburned, on the front porch of their home the next morning, no one is certain what has happened, not even Emma, herself. When friends turn their backs and horrific photos surface online, Emma is left sorting through a night she can’t remember with people she thought she knew and a life that will never be the same. An important, but, at times, incredibly difficult read, Asking for It, may take place in Ireland, but, unfortunately, could easily be set in contemporary America. Readers may have to brace themselves for the intensity of some passages, but Emma’s complex character and her devastating story are definitely worthy of the effort.
