Searching for Sailors

It’s relatively simple to search for sailors in training in the 1940 federal population census. In the bottom right corner of the Ancestry LE (Ancestry Library Edition) landing page, select 1940 from the U.S. Census box. Now try the following search (case does not matter):

SEARCH—LIVED IN: San Diego, San Diego, California, USA
KEYWORD: naval training (Exact)]
OCCUPATION: seaman (Exact)

This search returns 1,813 results. Search return abstract includes:

Age:
Est. Birth Year:
Race:
Birthplace: (state, territory, or country)
Marital Status:
Home in 1940
Home in 1935
