In Out of the Silent Planet, Ransom, the main character, is a linguistics professor in Cambridge, England, who enjoys trekking the English countryside by himself. The walks offer him a sense of independence and freedom, in addition to an opportunity to focus without interruptions and distractions. However, traveling on one’s own does have its downsides, particularly that the level of security and protection is very low. As a matter of fact, Ransom gets kidnapped by a pair of men – one a scientist, one a self-absorbed man who is an opportunistic politician at heart – who place him in their spacecraft. Yes, spacecraft. This craft (the very finest of its kind for the 1930s) takes Ransom and his captors to Mars, known as Malacandra to its inhabitants. Ransom escapes his captors and flees to the Malacandrians, who educate him in the rudiments of the native language. The Malacandrians then capture Ransom’s captors and send them back to Earth, along with Ransom. However, because of the position of the planets, the journey is perilous at this time of the year, and the scientist does not think that they will survive. When they are almost to the earth, they find that the moon is in the way of the earth, not to mention that their oxygen is running out. Next… read Out of the Silent Planet for yourself and find out!
