Not That Kind of Magician…

While magic is real in the Harry Potter books and films, here in the Lou you can’t do your heavy lifting with a wand. You can, however, use the federal population census to figure out how many persons were making a living as stage magicians in a particular census year.

You can use the following search to locate stage magicians in most recent federal population censuses:

SEARCH—OCCUPATION: magician (Exact)

1880—42 results
1900—135 results
1910—214 results
1920—128 results
1940—210 results

You’ll need to do a different search in the 1930 census (an Occupation search is not available):

SEARCH—KEYWORD: magician (Exact) 91 results
