National Bike Month

May is National Bike Month, and in honor of that, we searched for bicycle patents. The Cooperative Patent Classification subclass that covers bicycles is B62K.  There are 12,768 patents that come up in a search of that class; the earliest result is a patent from 1860 for a steam plow, which looks a little like a bicycle, as the image below shows:

However, the earliest bicycle patent is from 1868 for a velocipede, as bicycles were originally called.

Books at the St. Louis Public Library on bicycle maintenance and repair can be found at 629.28772, and books on bicycling for fun are at 796.6.
