Library of Congress Photo Collection

This record set contains a collection of approximately 340,000 public domain photographs and prints covering the years 1840-2000. The pictures have been collected from a variety of sources and places but today are held by the U.S. Library of Congress' Prints and Photographs Division. It includes prints and photos from 11 collections contained within the Prints and Photograph Division. The photos and prints are from a variety of places throughout the world, but most are from the U.S.

You may search by location, keyword, format, medium, created/published date, subject, and title. A search for St. Louis related items was more successful when as a keyword search for “St. Louis” than when done as a Location search.

Photos of interest may be emailed home or downloaded to the user’s computer.

Note: While this collection is available via two of our reference databases, Ancestry and HeritageQuest, you may use HeritageQuest from home with a valid library card and PIN.
