St. Louis Public Library celebrated the history and culture of hip-hop with its 4th Annual Hip Hop Appreciation Week, running May 15-20 at Central Library, 1301 Olive Street. All events were free and open to the public.

Lyrics in the Making (Teens Only)
May 2 & 9
6-7:30 p.m., Creative Experience
Write your own lyrics and create your own beats with help from ex’treme Institute by Nelly instructor Alonzo “Zo” Lee. Then get ready to perform your completed piece at Central Library’s talent show, Straight Outta Central on May 15.

4-5 p.m., Teen Lounge
Show your talent and rap, rhyme, freestyle or sing and give props to Hip Hop Appreciation Week.

DJ Kimmie Nu Live

6-7 p.m., Central’s Atrium
DJ Kimmie Nu spins during this live Hip Hop performance.

Open Mic

7-8:30 p.m., Central’s Auditorium
Show off your talent rap, rhyme or freestyle and celebrate Hip Hop Appreciation Week.

iLLPHONiCs Concert
May 16
7-8 p.m., outside Central Library
iLLPHONiCs is more than a band, it’s an identity. All five individuals in the band are founding members and, since 2006, they’ve consistently made some of the most groundbreaking music in the Midwest, tastefully blend rap vocals with strong musical composition.

Hip Hop Virtual Reality

Try out our HTC-Vive headset and create stunning graffiti in virtual reality or load your favorite hip-hop song and feel the music with the VR game Audioshield.

Business of Hip Hop Workshop

In this workshop, Alonzo “Zo” Lee, from the ex’treme Institute by Nelly, will explore the inner workings of the business of Hip Hop.

“Hip Hop: Beyond Beats & Rhymes” Screening
May 20
2-4 p.m., Creative Experience
A riveting examination of manhood, sexism and homophobia in hip-hop culture. Director Byron Hurt, former star college quarterback, longtime hip-hop fan and gender violence prevention educator, conceived the documentary as a "loving critique" of a number of disturbing trends in the world of rap music
