Freestyling at Pod 3

A couple of days a week, 23-year-old Joe Williams lays down tracks in Creative Experience, usually at Pod 3. He prefers the sound of the open room to the dedicated recording room. “I like the way the voice stretches,” he says.

Joe has been coming
to Creative Experience for about a half a year. He heard about the space from a friend, and at first, he says, he didn’t believe it. “A studio in a library?!”  Since then, he’s met a lot of people here who he’s helped record.

Joe says Creative Experience is “a blessing, and it’s free!” He appreciates being able to come here as an escape from the streets. “Any other studio, they charge outrageous prices just to put your voice to a beat,” he says.

Joe mostly produces songs with Audacity and Garage Band, which are available in Creative Experience. When he’s working on something about “a deep situation,” like the economy or politics, he says he usually writes lyrics ahead of time, but his process often includes freestyling on the mic at Pod 3. Je Phone Call, which Joe produced in Creative Experience, was inspired by an ex; it's a song he would consider deep, but he didn’t write it ahead of time; it just flowed.

Music is only one of Joe’s creative outlets. Dance, video, and tattooing are all part of his repertoire. Check out more of his work on  SoundcloudYoutube and Facebook.
