Fly the Friendly Skies

This record collection in Ancestry Library Edition (Ancestry LE) includes passenger and crew departure lists from both ships and aircraft:

U.S., Departing Passenger and Crew Lists, 1914-1966

The lists were recorded on a variety of forms that were turned over to the Immigration and Naturalization Service.

Details requested on the forms varied, but may include name of vessel, departure date, ports of departure and destination, shipmaster, full name, age, gender, physical description, military rank (if applicable), occupation, birthplace, citizenship, and residence.

It’s fairly easy to search for flights conducted by particular airlines:

SEARCH—AIRLINE: Eastern Air Lines (Exact) 25,100 hits
SEARCH—AIRLINE: National Airlines Inc. (Exact) 503 hits
SEARCH—AIRLINE: Pan American (Exact) 1,243,937 hits
SEARCH—AIRLINE: Transcontinental and Western (Exact) 64,084 hits

You can also include Departure Date, Departure Location, and Flight Number as search delimiters (if known).

You may use Ancestry LE at Central Library or any of our branches.
