Finding Widows in the 1890 Veterans Schedules

This record collection in Ancestry Library Edition (Ancestry LE) and Heritage Quest Online is an index to individuals enumerated in the 1890 special census of Civil War Union Army and Navy veterans and widows available on microfilm M123 (118 rolls) from the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA).

The Veterans Schedules asked for the following information:

Name of veteran or widow
Regiment or vessel
Date of enlistment
Date of discharge
Length of service
Post office address
Disability incurred

We can use the following search delimiters to locate widows from particular states listed in this census:

SEARCH—KEYWORD: widow (Exact) 9,547 hits

The same search done for the following states produced the results listed:

Kentucky: 2,388 hits
Maine: 2,926 hits
Maryland: 2,143 hits
Massachusetts: 8,185 hits
Michigan: 6,357 hits
New Hampshire: 1,865 hits
New Jersey: 3,704 hits
New York: 13,718 hits
Ohio: 16,540 hits
Pennsylvania: 18.024 hits

Note: This census does not cover every state: states beginning with the letters A through K were destroyed by a fire in 1921 (although half of the census for Kentucky survives). Also, I did not search every available state; you can use the Browse menu to see which states are available.

You may use Heritage Quest Online from home if you have an SLPL card and PIN; it's also available on reference computers at Central Library and our branches.

You may use Ancestry LE at Central Library or any of our branches.
