Explosive Politics: A Miniature Artists’ Book

Special Collections is home to a small but growing assortment of contemporary artists' books. Our latest acquisition, Explosive Politics: Contrasting Views of Civic Discourse, by Ed Hutchins, opens a new window is a timely one, especially given that the Fourth of July is right around the corner.

Thought provoking in both design and content, the book is composed of numerous small components nestled inside a miniature “explosives” box made of maple. It measures 2 ¼” x 4 ¼.” Its key piece is a 2-sided accordion book that features boldly printed action words representing two campaign strategies – positive and negative. Our copy is number 34 of just 45 made by Hutchins last year.

If you would like to take a look at Explosive Politics, please call Special Collections at 314-539-0370 to set up an appointment. We would be happy to hear from you. Happy Independence Day!
