Did you know that Central Library has an amazing collection of music scores? We have a collection that ranges from classical music to modern music (yes, including that Beyoncé book in the photo here) and encompasses vocal and instrumental music. Here are just a few examples of what you’ll find:
- Organ music (perfect for church organists or students);
- Piano music, including concertos, for musicians at many levels. We have editions by Dover, Schirmer, and G. Henle Verlag (Urtext, or original text editions), as well as other publishers;
- Music for instruments like the violin, viola, flute, horns, and more;
- Symphony scores
- Music from musicals like Wicked, Miss Saigon and The Sound of Music (just to name a few). After seeing one of these productions, you can come to the library, grab the music CD and the score, and be all set to sing along!
With brick-and-mortar music stores disappearing, many musicians now order their music scores online. However, it can be tricky to compare editions without seeing them in person, on paper. For students, being able to compare notations between a Schirmer and Henle can make a big difference in how they play a piece. Being able to check out a score from the library is also an easy way to try out a piece of music or introduce yourself to a new composer, without having to purchase the music sight unseen.
Whether you’re a music student, music teacher, or just someone who appreciates music, we welcome you to explore our collection of scores. The scores collection may be found in the Entertainment/Literature/Biography Room in Central Library, and we also have many more scores in our Stacks. Just ask any of our friendly staff for assistance!
