Interested in joining a self-guided writing program without having to spend a dime? Consider checking out DIY MFA, a website for writers by a writer. Gabriela Pereira, founder of DIY MFA, wanted to create a course for people who didn't want to (or couldn't) commit themselves to a traditional MFA program.
The website includes articles by Pereira and other established writers as well as the "Writer Igniter," a tab that generates random writing prompts. The site is also home to Pereira's podcast on which various writers are interviewed and writing issues are discussed. For writers looking for a little more structure, Pereira offers two fee-based courses that can be purchased on the website.
Saint Louis Public Library carries Pereira's book, DIY MFA along with a variety of resources designed to enhance and support your writing experience:
It is said that the best readers make the best writers, so head to your local library branch and check out as many books as you can carry. (Probably the most fun way to hone your craft.)
