Dark Day in December

It’s fairly easy to find records of men who were killed or went missing on 7 December 1941, the day the Japanese armada attacked Pearl Harbor. In fact, there are several ways to search!

The first way involves a Basic Search from the Ancestry Library Edition (ALE) landing page. Click Begin Searching (green button), and then Show More Options. Next, do this search:

Death—Year: 1941 (Exact)
Death—Location: Pearl Harbor, Honolulu, Hawaii, USA (Exact) [2,673 hits]

You can filter results in several ways, including this one:

Birth—Location: Missouri, USA (Exact)
Death—Year: 1941 (Exact)
Death—Location: Pearl Harbor, Honolulu, Hawaii, USA (Exact) [62 hits]

A similar search with Illinois as Birth—Location gets 100 hits.

You can also search this way. On the ALE landing page, select Quick Links—Military. Then do this search:

Death—Day—Month—Year: 7 December 1941 (Exact)
Keyword: Honolulu, Hawaii, United States (Exact) [3,583 hits]

You can filter the above results in several ways, including this one:

Death—Day—Month—Year: 7 December 1941 (Exact)
Military—Location: Honolulu County, Hawaii, USA (Exact)
Keyword: Missing (Exact) [1,623 hits]

You may use ALE at Central Library or any of our branches.
