Childish Gambino’s “Awaken, My Love!” deviates heavily from his previous records, moving away from the hip hop genre.
The album, produced by Ludwig Göransson, is infused with rock, R&B, soul, and 70’s inspired sounds. The album is supported by the singles “Me and your Mama," “Redbone," and “Terrified."
“Redbone," the most successful of the three, draws inspiration from the 70’s band Funkadelic and features a catchy hook that reminds the listener to “stay woke." The track following “Redbone”, “California”, is my personal favorite. Gambino sings in a comical, high-pitched singing voice while poking fun at someone moving to California to get famous saying “she must’ve f****** lost her mind."
Overall, “Awaken, My Love!” is a great album, although it does have its weak points. The second track “Have Some Love”; it’s a catchy song, but the advice to “love one another” just feels kind of limp. I really liked the album from my first listen, but for some people it might have to marinate for a bit and take a few listens to enjoy.
