The person filling this position will work under the direction the Third Floor Manager to serve the research and information needs of patrons of the Rare Books and Special Collections Room. The primary duties of this position are the physical processing of archival and manuscript collections according to procedures and priorities, maintenance of intellectual control to collections via creation of finding aids, indexes, metadata, document description, and collection guides; providing in-person reference service as well as email and traditional mail reference; assisting with digitization projects; and assisting with programs and exhibits. This position also serves as the lead archivist responsible for the St. Louis Media Archives and oversees all aspects of such including acquisitions, processing, reference, outreach, programs, and exhibits. This position requires strong verbal, written, and computer skills; in-depth knowledge of archival practices, principles, and standards; attention to detail; the ability to work on simultaneous projects; the ability to conduct reference/research from a variety of source materials, the ability to analyze project requirements and prepare work estimates, and the ability to move or lift boxes weighing up to 50 lbs. Experience with acquisitions, record appraisal, arrangement, description, and reference techniques required. Experience with preservation techniques and preparation of exhibits preferred. The person in this position will be responsible for Children Services at Central Library (reference, programs, reader advisory & outreach). Will schedule, plan and present programs for: children-preschool to teens, parent and teacher groups and building tours for school groups. Prepares deposit collections, manage toy lending service, book boxes, large fairy tale collection and maintain Central’s Juvenile and YA collection, both in the room and in stacks (weeding and replacement orders). Will work closely with the Teen Services Librarian to manage the day to day operation of Central Youth Services including scheduling outreach programs and volunteers, may also serve as “in charge” person in the absence of the Teen Services Librarian. Will also, work closely with the First Floor Manager and Central departments to ensure adequate staffing in the Children’s Library and Teen Lounge. Knowledge of children’s literature, storytelling skills and program experience are essential. May require travel to various locations storytelling and other outreach programs. Must be flexible, have attention to detail, cheerful and positive disposition and able to establish rapport with staff and patrons of all ages.
