Author Shelia P. Moses
The St. Louis Public Library’s Read It Forward program presents an appearance by Shelia P. Moses, author of I, Dred Scott: A Fictional Slave Narrative Based on the Life and Legal Precedent of Dred Scott. She will appear at the Schlafly Branch, 225 N. Euclid Ave, on October 17 at 6 p.m. to discuss and sign copies of her work. Books will be for sale courtesy of the author. The event is FREE and open to the public.
Shelia P. Moses won a Coretta Scott King Honor for The Legend of Buddy Bush in 2005. She is the co-author of Dick Gregory's memoir, Callus on My Soul, and is the author of two more books for young adults: The Baptism (2007), and The Return of Buddy Bush (2006).
Twice a year, Library staff choose a Read It Forward title and give away hundreds of copies of the book. Teens are encouraged to read the book and pass it to a friend and to check out other titles by the same author. Then we bring the author to St. Louis to inspire the students to become readers and writers. Over 9,000 teens have shared Read it Forward titles in the past two years. Previous selections include Names Will Never Hurt Me by Jamie Adoff, We Beat the Streets by Sharon Draper, and Locomotion by Jacqueline Woodson.
This fall, the Library gave away 250 copies of I, Dred Scott. Since 2007 is the 150th anniversary of the Dred Scott Decision that was handed down at St. Louis’ Old Courthouse, I, Dred Scott is a timely choice.
