Activist Valentino Achak Deng @ Schlafly
St. Louis, MO . . . The St. Louis Public Library is proud to present an evening with activist Valentino Achak Deng, the hero from Dave Eggers’ newest book, What is the What. The event takes place at the Schlafly Branch Library, 225 N. Euclid Ave., on Thursday, May 17 at 7 p.m. Left Bank Books will be on-hand with copies of What is the What for purchase and signing by Valentino. The program is FREE and open to the public. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.
What is the What is the novelized autobiography of Valentino Achak Deng—from his pre-war life in Marial Bai to his resettlement in the United States. Separated from his family, Valentino was a refugee in war-ravaged southern Sudan. His travels brought him into contact with disease, starvation, enemy soldiers, liberation rebels, and deadly murahaleen (militias on horseback)—the same sort who currently terrorize Darfur.
Valentino will discuss these and other experiences as well as his foundation, which helps the Sudanese people improve their lives.
