A home-based business costs less and saves time. It can cut down on the overhead of starting the business elsewhere so it eliminates rent expenses. There is no commuting time and no gas, tolls or parking fees. If there are children in the home you can save on day care.
One of the first things you should do before starting a home-based business is check the zoning ordinances in your city. Find out what your property is zoned for and what restrictions apply. Most cities require you to have a business license. The Small Business Development Center in your city can help you learn the laws for your location.

SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives) provides free business counseling. They match volunteer counselors with clients needing advice to get started in their own business or help those who are already in business. SCORE offers seminars and workshops at its local chapters. |

Working in the home is more successful if you have the support of your family. Discuss where the space in your home you will be working from. Let them know your work hours. And that it could give you more time to spend with them.
You can be very flexible and decide your own work schedule. Know where work stops and home begins. To separate work from home install a business phone line and rent a mailbox from the post office. Don't forget to take lunch and short breaks throughout the day and close the door as you leave the office at the end of the day.
