Butcher continues her series of the Sentinel warriors in this story about Andra and Paul. Andra has spent her life finding kidnapped children. She started doing this after her mother was killed, one of her sisters kidnapped, and the other seriously injured and mentally unbalanced by an attack of monsters.
Paul is one of the Sentinel warriors who is charged with keeping the Synestryn monsters from breaking the barriers into his world. All of the warriors are dying because they have not found their mates, the ones who can use and drain the strong power that builds up in each warrior. He has been looking for his mate for several weeks when he and his mates discover Andra facing several of the monsters who have kidnapped a small boy. Andra doesn't know that she is not fully human, but part of the world Paul is protecting. Paul must figure out how to tell her about her heritage and convince her to work with him.

Ward's latest entry into the Black Dagger Brotherhood series focuses on Rehvenge, a member of the vampire aristocracy, but also owner of a notorious night club that fronts for a drug and prostitution operation. Rhev is hiding a big secret and a blackmailer has forced him to pay in many ways for twenty-five years to keep the secret.
Ehlena is a nurse down on her luck who works at the clinic Rehvenge visits. She is attracted to Rehv, but knows nothing of his notorious side. When she tries to help him, their attraction to each other ingnites.
All of this story is woven into the continuing story of the vampires' fight against the lessers, the group that continues to kill all of them. Although the story does drag a bit in the middle, the dramatic ending moves quickly and leaves a cliffhanger that indicates continued visits to the world of the Brotherhood.
