| Authors @ Your Library presents: Stefan Bradley |
(Carpenter) |
|
| |
7:00PM - 8:30PM |
Stefan Bradley will discuss and sign his book Harlem vs. Columbia. In this dynamic book, Stefan Bradley describes the impact of Black Power ideology on the Students' Afro-American Society at Columbia. While white students--led by Mark Rudd and Students for a Democratic Society (SDS)--sought to radicalize the student body and restructure the university, black students focused on stopping the construction of the gym in Morningside Park. Through separate, militant action, black students and the black community stood up to the power of an Ivy League institution and stopped it from trampling over its relatively poor and powerless neighbors. Stefan M. Bradley is an assistant professor of history and African American studies at Saint Louis University. Books available for sale. |

| |
6:00PM - 7:00PM |
Paul Volponi, our Read It Forward author, will discuss and sign his book, Black and White. Marcus and Eddie are the stars of Long Island City High School’s basketball team. Marcus is black and Eddie is white. Both boys are looking forward to great futures in college basketball and are waiting to see where they’ll land their scholarships. Then one cold night, something goes wrong and they make a big mistake. Now they can’t turn back and one of them will have to pay. Told in their two voices, BLACK AND WHITE is the gripping story of two good boys who make a bad mistake. It’s also a heartbreaking look at the realities of the urban criminal justice system. Black and White is the winner of the International Reading Association’s 2006 Young Adult Novel of the Year, an American Library Association Best Book Young Adult and Quick Pick (inspiring non-readers to read) Top Ten selection, and a New York City Public Library Book for the Teen Age selection. The work received starred reviews from Publishers Weekly, Booklist, and The Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books. Paul Volponi is a writer, journalist and teacher living in New York City. For six years he taught incarcerated teens on Rikers Island to read and write, and for six years taught teens in drug day-treatment centers, influencing many of his novels. Clifton Taulbert received a standing ovation at the completion of his presentation as the special Keynote Speaker of the National Park Service, celebrating the life and birthplace of noted American, George Washington Carver. During his research on the extraordinary life of Carver, Taulbert coined the phrase "The Impossible is Possible." According to Taulbert, "Carver's life is very relevant for us today. I can't wait to share my thoughts on his legacy." Clifton Taulbert, a Pulitzer nominated author for Once Upon a Time When We Were Colored (1989) and the president and founder of the Building Community Institute, speaks worldwide on the critical issue of building community. His books Eight Habits of the Heart and Eight Habits of the Heart for Educators advance the theory that "unselfish leadership...ensures student success." Before he became an author (including of the Little Cliff children's series) and professional speaker, Taulbert worked in the banking industry. After a stint as a sergeant in the US Air Force, Taulbert earned his B.A. at Oral Roberts University, and earned continuing professional education credits (toward an MBA) from Southwest Graduate School of Banking at Southern Methodist University. Recipient of the 17th annual National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Image Award for literature, Taulbert was one of the first African American writers to win the Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters Award for nonfiction, and was named by Time magazine one of America's outstanding black entrepreneurs.
